The data indicates a steady increase in listings from 2016 to 2021, peaking in 2023, while 2025 shows a sharp decline with only 168 listings. This suggests a growing preference for newer vehicles among Turo hosts, likely driven by demand for modern features and reliability.

Number of Available Listings by Type of the Models

In the current Turo marketplace, the distribution of available listings by vehicle type reveals interesting trends. SUVs lead the pack with a total of 3,148 listings, making them the most popular choice among hosts. Following closely are standard cars, with 2,797 listings. Minivans and trucks have a significantly lower presence, with only 240 and 111 listings, respectively. This data highlights the strong demand for SUVs and standard cars, suggesting that hosts may want to consider these types when expanding their fleets.

Some Cars Never Rented

In the Turo marketplace, certain car models are quite rare, with only a handful of listings available. Here are the five least common car models currently on the platform, each with just one listing and no new bookings recorded.

• Chevrolet Chevelle (1971) - 1 listing, 0 new bookings

• Chevrolet Colorado (2022) - 1 listing, 0 new bookings

In January 2025, the car rental market in Los Angeles showcased a dynamic range of pricing and availability. The average daily rental price (mean) fluctuated around $90.33, with a median price (P50) of $62.00 and a 90th percentile price (P90) reaching $155.00. The total volume of listings varied significantly, peaking at 5,837 listings on January 22.

Analyzing the data reveals several trends. Initially, prices started strong at the beginning of the month, with a mean of $90.33 on January 1. However, a downward trend in pricing was observed, with the mean dropping to $76.80 by January 27. This decline coincided with an increase in listing volume, suggesting that more hosts entered the market, leading to increased competition and lower prices.

Interestingly, while the mean price decreased, the P90 price remained relatively stable, indicating that premium listings still commanded higher rates. The highest P90 price recorded was $155.00 on January 1, gradually decreasing but still reflecting a strong market for higher-end vehicles.

Overall, Turo hosts in Los Angeles should consider adjusting their pricing strategies in response to these trends. As the volume of listings increases, competitive pricing will be crucial to attract renters while still maximizing earnings.

A picture is worth a thousand words so here examples of good and bad photos.

Tips:

• Wash it, put on tire shine.

• Take a photo in a scenic background, even if it’s just an open road.

• Photograph from a lower angle.

• Make sure there is plenty of space around the car because in the listing it will be zoomed in.

A good description starts with ChatGPT

Image yourself in your customer’s shoes. They noticed your car, they liked the price, now it’s time to learn more. This is where you get to keep or loose a customer!

The description should make the user feel like this is the perfect car for them, that it will perfect for their trip or occasion. If you asked me a year ago I would say this is the hardest part of listing the car, but with ChatGPT on our side this becomes a super easy task.

I took an example description from the same 2010 Prius above:

* This vehicle is equipped with Michelin All-Season radial tires. They have extra sipes (line cuts) for greater traction on ice/snow and a directional design to increase grab. It is completely compliant with Colorado high country highway winter traction laws.

added the included features and entered this prompt into ChatGPT:

I want to list my car for rental on a Turo car sharing platform. It is a 2010 Prius with 50mpg,  5 seats, equipped with Michelin All-Season radial tires which have extra sipes (line cuts) for greater traction on ice/snow and a directional design to increase grab, and these features:

Here’s what it gave me:

Adjust default settings

Turo lists your car with default pricing, discount and availability settings which may not be to your liking. Review at least the following:

Protection plan

Turo offers 5 different plans that can be a bit tricky to choose from but here’s how I think about it:

• If you only have 1 car and you need it, choose 75 or 60. The 60 plan includes loss of income but’s by far the most costly to you.

• If you can afford any deductible payments in case of an accident you can choose the 80, 85 or 90 depending on your savings account.

• I keep all my cars on the 90 plan. The few accidents I’ve had were all covered by the guest’s deductible payment.

Here’s some math you can use for comparing plan values have deductibles for a car that can do gross bookings of $5,000 in a year. Since the cheapest coverage ($2,500 deductible) is in plan 90 we can compare others against it.

• 85 plan ($1,625 deductible) will cost you $250 extra and will reduce deductible by $875. The extra cost would pay for the extra deductible in $875/$250 or 3.5 years.

• 80 plan ($750 deductible) will cost you $500 more and will reduce your deductible by $1,750. The extra cost would pay for the extra deductible in $1750/500 or 3.5 years.

• 75 plan ($250 deductible) will cost you $750 more and will reduce your deductible by $2,250. The extra cost would pay for the extra deductible in $2250/750 or 3 years.

• 60 plan ($0 deductible) will cost you $1000 more and will reduce your deductible by $2,500 and pay back in 2500/1000 or 2.5 years.

Large accidents are rare, Turo doesn’t disclose exact numbers but they will vary based on the cars you’re renting. Sports cars are probably more likely to get involved in an accident than a family minivan.

Pricing range

Turo’s default pricing range tends to be on a cheaper side. If you don’t know what you should set your range to, checkout https://turbopricing.com where you can find prices for all cars in your market.

Discounts

Depending on the car you’re listing these may vary. You may also need to adjust them if you don’t get enough bookings. Here are my settings for my 2021 BMW X5.

The 3-day and 1-week discount is probably the most used one. Having a larger discount will make your car cheaper among others but will also reduce your earnings potential. Revisit this after a few months or after you’ve gotten at least 10 trips.

Although most trips are booked within the same week, the longer trips are booked more in advance and for the busier seasons. I keep this at 5% as it usually combines with multi-day discount which further reduces my take.

Trip preference

These settings can lead to canceled reservations and poor ratings so really thing about your time availability. Can you get the car ready on a short notice? Do you have someone that can help in case of a last minute booking?

Trip buffer is a time between potential bookings, how much time do you need to check out and prepare it for another customer.

During busy seasons I turn this on, but when it’s slow I leave it off to maximize bookings.

Distance limits

Distance limits are critical for customers looking for longer trips. Depending on your car you may be ok with 1000mi over 2 days but most hosts set the limit to 250mi/day.

Consider your area, if you’re close to destinations that require 500mi round trip then offering 200/day won’t help those customers. For example, I live 170 miles away from a very popular destination so offering 200mi limits never been an issue for me.

The Unlimited miles can be a great way to attract customers but beware of the increased maintenance costs. Enabling it for the slower months can be a great competitive advantage.

Create automated messages to save time

Turo introduced an ability to create message template that get sent upon different stages of the trip. For example, you can send an automated welcome message right after the car is booked. It’s a great way to engage a customer, say thanks, tell them about the car or pickup.

While no one likes to think about their car meeting a sad fate, being prepared will save you many headaches. Have a contingency plan and remember, it's all part of the rental game.

2. Time & Effort Investment

Think you can just hand over the keys and sit back? Think again! Prepping your car for guests—washing, cleaning, and ensuring everything is in tip-top shape—can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. Consider whether you have the time, facilities, or a handy car wash nearby to keep your car looking its best. Providing a great experience will get your better ratings and more future trips.

3. Upkeep and Maintenance

The more your car rolls, the more love it needs. A typical Turo car can rack up around 20,000 miles annually, meaning frequent maintenance checks are a must. Yes, this might impact your car’s resale value, but the earnings should cover your monthly payments, insurance, and maintenance costs, balancing out any loss and often turning a tidy profit.

4. Emotional Detachment

Prepare to see your car return with a few more wrinkles and stories than it had before. If the thought of your car getting a little roughed up makes you queasy, you might want to rethink renting it out. It’s okay to feel hesitant at first—I did too! But seeing your car as a business asset rather than a personal treasure can make all the difference.

5. Start With What You Have

My advice? Start small. Use a spare car or one you don’t need daily. This approach minimizes the risk of debt and gives you a taste of what being a Turo host entails without overwhelming commitment. It costs nothing to list your car so give it a try!

Overall: Renting your car on Turo isn’t just about earning extra cash; it’s about embracing a new way of thinking about what a car can do for you. While it might not turn you into a full-time car rental mogul, it’s a great way to cover your car expenses and maybe even fund those little extras in your life.

In 2021, I was faced with a decision about what to do with my 2014 Mazda 6, which was gathering dust after we purchased a newer model. Selling it could offer a quick cash boost, yet there were times a second car would be handy. Then, a friend introduced me to Turo, where he was renting out a Corvette in Florida. The idea of turning my idle car into a profit-making machine was too tempting to pass up.

Deciding Not to Sell

We had family visits a few times a year so “it would have been nice” to have a second car for those occasions. On the other hand, paying insurance and registration fees for a car that isn’t used most of the time wasn’t smart either.

At that time, the car had around 60k miles and was worth about $10,000. A nice chunk of cash to put into savings. I was getting really excited about this payday :) but as you can already suspect I didn’t end up selling it.

Discovering Turo

Right around that time I learned of Turo from a friend of mine who told me how he’s renting a Corvette in Florida. The idea of “employing” sounded very enticing so I decided to learn more.

Key factors that made me want to give it:

• No upfront cost

• Fully insured trips from the host or renter’s side

I downloaded the app, followed their instructions and 30min later my car was listed for rental.

The Initial High

I listed the car for about $55/day and soon I started getting booking requests. I finished that year earning around $600/mo which was beyond expectations. It covered my insurance, registration fees, maintenance and left with more. . In fact, those earnings covered the highlander loan payments.

Real Costs of Car Sharing

“Almost” is the keyword here, the money was paying for my car expenses but it wasn’t free. Here are the real costs behind these numbers:

• Time - each trip takes about 15-45min of work to prepare the car. An average over 4 trips per month amounts to around an hour to three of work.

• Cleaning & Maintenance Costs - car washes, extra oil changes, air filters, tires, etc.

• Wear and tear - extra milage (it was around 1k miles per month), interior wear etc.

Starting with $3,613:

• Turo took 10% (this number is adjustable) - $361.3

• Maintenance and insurance - $300

• Registration - $600

That left me with around $2300 of pure profit which is around $380 per month.

For those still following the math, it’s about $90 - 200 per hour!

That made me quite satisfied with the efforts I was putting in and returns I was getting.

I sold my Mazda 6 in 2022 for $7000 after it has earned me $8,000. Not too shabby for a first go at Turo. In retrospect, I should have kept the car for another year and squeezed even more profit out of it.

Unexpected Challenges

I still remember the feeling of my stomach dropping the first time I received call from a customer telling me he got into an accident. I wanted to quit Turo right at that moment but told myself “this is just the cost of doing business”. Turo’s claim process worked as expected and everything got resolved in a week. This wasn’t the last of it:)

Over the one year I had the Mazda rented I experienced the bitter side of the business.

• Small accident - paid by the renter with his deductible ($500)

• Broken side window - paid by the renter with her deductible ($1500)

• Smoking violation - reimbursed $150 by Turo directly.

Luckily, I had no major accidents or crazy renters but I expect that one day I will.

“This is just the cost of running a business.”
